Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's son Bilal Erdogan is claimed to be ISIS member based on photo taken with alleged DAESH militants
On 27 November 2015, the RT (Russia Today) website claimed that there is a speculation that the younger son of the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Bilal Erdogan, is directly involved in the black market oil business with DAESH, publishing a picture of Bilal Erdogan with alleged DAESH members.
However, the picture published on RT’s website is not a new one and has been in circulation in the media for a long time. It was taken in 2014 at a restaurant while Bilal Erdogan was having dinner. The owners of the restaurant, Ismail and Ali Kamber, wanted to take a photograph with Bilal Erdogan. Using this photograph, Russian media outlets started to claim that these people are DAESH members.1
Even Haluk Koc, then-spokesperson of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition party, shared the photograph with journalists in a press conference and stated that “Bilal Erdogan is having dinner with DAESH members”.2
However, the people in the picture with Bilal Erdogan are restaurant owners.3
Both brothers gave an interview to the state-run Turkish Radio and Television Association (TRT) and stated that they came to Istanbul almost 25 years ago. Having worked at taverns and night clubs, they ultimately decided to change their way of life and opened their own restaurant in the Fatih disctrict of Istanbul.
The Kamber brothers said a lot of famous people such politicians and singers have come to their place at times. "If Bilal Erdogan is a DAESH member, so are those famous people," said one of the brothers.
