Peoples' Democratic Party's (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas claims Turkish government does not call DAESH terrorist organization
The HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas claimed that the Turkish government does not call DAESH a terrorist organisation during the HDP Provincial Organization’s solidarity dinner on 28 October 2015.1
In his speech Demirtas criticized Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s statement that Turkey struck twice areas under the control of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)—an affiliate of the Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) which is recognized as terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, NATO and the EU—and said, “Why do you not strike DAESH in Jarabulus? You cannot even call DAESH as terrorist yet.”
However, DAESH was recognized as terrorist organization by a Turkish cabinet decree on 10 October 2013.2 President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed that DAESH is a bloody-handed terrorist organization in a UN Security Council meeting on 24 September 2014.34 Prime Minister Davutoglu also referred to DAESH as a terrorist organization several times. In one of his speeches in May 2015, Davutoglu also said that Turkey is the first country to identify and declare DAESH as a terrorist organization.
Where is Jarablus and what exactly is the situation on the Syrian border?
Jarablus is a Syrian city on the Turkish-Syrian border. After the Syrian conflict started in March 2011, the Syrian opposition took over Jarablus along with its border post on 20 July 2012. However, since early July 2013, the town has been controlled by DAESH. By January 2014, rebels engaged in clashes with DAESH and briefly seized the town, but DAESH was able to recapture it within hours.5
Turkey has proposed an international intervention to clear DAESH from its border and replacing their presence with a "safe zone" controlled by the Syrian opposition, stretching from the town of Mare to Jarablus, which would allow Syrians displaced by the war to return to their homes.
