Columnist with Middle East Eye claims ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is led by President Erdogan

Alex MacDonald wrote a news article in the Middle East Eye on 24 December 2015 about the reactions to Christmas celebrations in Turkey. He said that some Turks are not in the festive mood and gave examples of protests aginst Christmas celebrations.1

In his article, MacDonald refers to the AK Party (Justice and Development Party) as “the ruling party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan”. However, this is a factual mistake given that presidents in Turkey cannot be members of any party according to the Turkish Constitution. Erdogan assumed his presidency 28 August 2014 after quitting the AK Party.2
