Claim: Bogazici University Rector to Appoint Government Loyalist in the New Departments
Claim: Establishment of New Departments in Bogazici University Allow the New Rector to Appoint Government Loyalists
The President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the establishment of two new departments in Bogazici University, the country’s most prestigious university, which has suffered by weeks of provocations.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision, published in the Official Gazette Saturday, says law and communications faculties are to be launched in Bogazici University.
It is a false statement that the establishment of new departments would allow the presidentially appointed rector to staff them with government loyalists.
The fact is that all the personnel and academic staff are appointed by defined rules. It is not possible to appoint or hire people without binding regulations. Strict rules are implemented by authorities when appointing and choosing personnel and academicians.
Furthermore, Industrial Engineering Faculty member Prof. Dr. Gurkan Kumbaroglu and Physics Department member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Naci Inci have been appointed as vice rectors. Both of the professors are not related with the new departments; therefore, the establishment of new departments would NOT allow the presidentially appointed rector to staff them with government loyalists.
‘Student’ groups involved in the protests tweeted against the new decision, saying it was an “occupation” attempt against academic freedoms. As mentioned above, this is also a false statement; universities are designed to educate next generations, so, every step is taken for real students who are seeking for being educated not for provocateurs.
That is worth to underline that police have detained so-called students at the university, however, most of them who did not commit a crime were released as soon as possible.
It is also worth to keep in mind that is known, even by the Western Media, terrorist groups are provoking the protests and most of the protesters are not students.
