On 27 June 2018, an article on Turkey’s latest elections was published in Rudaw. The article claimed that, now that he is reelected president, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will issue decrees having the force of law (DHFL).

“A new executive president will, among other things, have the power to appoint senior judges, unelected vice-presidents and the cabinet, will suffer almost no oversight from parliament, and enjoy the power to issue decrees with the force of law,” the article read.

The article claimed that re-elected president Recep Tayyip Erdogan will continue to use previously enforced state of emergency powers constitutionally granted to the post of president under the newly implemented executive presidential governance system as well.

Independent article includes factual mistakes about Turkey’s constitutional amendments and parliamentary immunity of deputies

On 20 June 2018, the Independent published an article about Turkey’s snap elections. However, the article contained factual mistakes.

Firstly, the article claimed that Turkey’s parliament voted to lift the parliamentary immunities of the deputies of the Peoples’ Democracy Party (HDP) in 2016. In fact, the parliament lifted the immunities of members of all parties in the parliament, not just the deputies of the HDP.

Claim: Turkey’s millionaire population declined last year

On 2 June 2018, the New York Times published an article about the global capital movements in which it was claimed that the millionaire population in Turkey declined by 12 percent in 2017 due to “affluent Turks effectively moving large sums of money out of the country."

The 12 percent decline in Turkey’s millionaire population last year was by far the largest of any major economy.
