On 21 October 2016, the Economist published an article about the Kurds in Turkey in which it was claimed that they do not have political representation. The article presented this claim as the underlying logic of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) fight against the Turkish state.
On 17 October 2016, Turkish daily Cumhuriyet released a news story on abortion in Turkey which cited the results of a study that asked hospital employees over the phone whether they perform abortions or not.
A Kurdish politician named Hursit Kulter went missing after he was detained for his alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a militant group which is listed as terrorist by Turkey, the US, the EU and NATO and seeks to impose its Marxist-Leninist ideology on Turkey’s majority-Kurdish southeast.
On 5 October 2016, a professor at Duke University claimed in a tweet that Turkey released “rapists” and “robbers” to imprison well-educated people.
In response to the tweet: “I would suggest Turkey’s prison population would be among the least educated,” professor Timur Kuran tweeted: “No. Rapists, robbers, etc. freed to make room for witch hunt victims. Poorly educated convicts out, teachers, academics, media people in.”
On 4 October 2016, a news story was released by Al Jazeera in which Jordan was placed on top of a list of the countries that host the largest refugee populations around the world, referencing an Amnesty International report.
On 24 September 2016, credit ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Turkey’s sovereign credit rating to Ba1 from Baa3, which is a non-investment grade dubbed “junk” and means that the agency does not regard Turkey as suitable for financial investment anymore.
