On 16 August 2016, an article was published in the Middle East Eye in which it was claimed that the evidence that US-based cult leader Fethullah Gulen – the head of an organization on Turkey’s terror list dubbed the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETO) – masterminded last month's failed coup attempt in Turkey was “flimsy”.

On 18 August 2016, Turkish novelist Elif Safak posted a tweet on her personal Twitter account in which she called the Turkish daily newspaper Ozgur Gundem “pro-Kurdish”.

“I'm shocked/sad to learn #AsliErdogan one of Turkey's brightest authors has been detained in proKurdish #OzgurGundem closure; unacceptable,” read the tweet.

Ozgur Gundem was shut down temporarily on 16 August 2016 on the grounds of terror propaganda.

Reuters makes factual mistakes in article on Turkey

On 2 August 2016, Reuters released a news story about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statements on the failed coup attempt that took place on 15 July night. But it included factual mistakes.

The story referred to the building in which Turkish President delivered his speech as “his palace”. The building, whose official name is the Presidential Complex, however, is not President Erdogan’s private property, hence not “his”. Rather, it is state property.
